Critical Thinking | Emotions | Decision Making

Welcome Readers!

A human being is basically an emotional animal. All of its social and individual dealings are largely based on emotions. For example, if a woman receives a work opportunity in Bangalore and if she is a native of Gujarat, firstly, she would think about her socio-cultural background and then about her career. Complete rational choices and critical thinking are marred by emotions and feelings. If this woman's parents are alive and aged, she will think about them and may decide not to take the job and live with her parents.

There are several scenarios around us we can think of but the following video about critical thinking and decision-making is worth watching.

Que. 1 What is historical context of Things Fall Apart ?

The novel Things Fall Apart is historically connected with the independence of Nigeria. Nigeria was under British empire's occupancy. Nigeria became independent on 1st October 1960.

“The white man is very clever. He came quietly and peaceably with his religion. We were amused at his foolishness and allowed him to stay. Now he has won our brothers, and our clan can no longer act like one. He has put a knife on the things that held us together and we have fallen apart.”
― Chinua Achebe, Things Fall Apart

Que. What is the significance of the title ?

Ans: The title of the novel is taken from W B Yeats' poem 'The Second Coming'. The poem was written in 1919.

Here are the exact lines from the poem.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
