Here is a blog post about the critical essay "Tradition and Individual Talent", written by a renowned critic T. S. Eliot. The task about this course was to watch five short video lectures from the Flinnt website and to write the brief understanding of what student got from the video.
(1) Introduction
The video explains about T. S. Eliot and his contemporary critics of the 20th century. Their works played vital role to new criticism. I A Richards, T. S. Eliot, Allen Tate, J. C. Ransom, and Cleanth Brooks were the critics of 20th century.
(2) Concept of Tradition
Tradition in its literal meaning refers that at some place, at some time, people living their life, believing in certain beliefs and carrying out the way of life. Tradition can be handed down the generation. Tradition, actually used for criticizing the romantics. Modern poet has to write with the awareness of literary tradition. Eliot's works also have the hint of tradition but still it has newness and looks as an individual talent.
(3) "Some can absorb knowledge, the more tardy must sweat for it".
Shakespeare appears to be an exceptional individual talent and for him the words are used 'absorbed the knowledge'. Even after having very less knowledge about other languages than English, he succeeded to create the works of literature that emerged as an individual talent.
(4) The chemical reaction: Theory of Depersonalization
The wonderful explanation of a part of essay, through the chemical reaction of sulfuric acid and the role of catalyst, here, platinum, in the whole process. It is well explained that how poet should remain aloof and unaffected from his own work yet playing a vital role.
(5) Summing up
Simply summarized the whole essay, with appropriate quotes, in an easy and lucid way.
Indeed, I've found this short video lectures very fruitful and important for my literary criticism paper. On Flinnt also it is designed all well for students.
Thank You !
