Newcomers to Arts and Humanities

Hello Readers!

Finally, after such a long gap, I have found an insightful topic to share. Today's topic is about the class of people who feel bored, tired, and sick of the rat race of chasing after money, mindless scrolling, disturbed social relations, and a meaningless, stressful life. Many of us suffer from anxiety, and stress and seek out the best resort in watching films, listening to songs, and sharing funny short videos and reels with friends. Amidst this practice, there lies a wonderful factor of creativity. A person always finds some songs, films, and stories quite relatable because of the deep charm of creativity behind the content.

Now let me put a debatable topic here.

"People from non-arts backgrounds appreciate the creative and philosophical aspects of enjoyable content, feeling that, despite having all the luxuries and wealth, something meaningful is missing from their lives. Meanwhile, individuals in creative arts and philosophical fields tend to broaden their current knowledge and go beyond the available content."

There are two premises here.

1. People from the STEM field
2. People from creative arts, humanities, and philosophical branches.

There are two points of view as well.

1. People from the STEM field enjoy the depths of all arts and creative materials such as films, songs, and stories, and at one point in life, they think they could have pursued arts and humanities.

2. People from arts and humanities, and creative pursuits undergo a rigorous process of ego clashes with the truth and redefine their understanding while creating anything new and original. This philosophical churning in mind makes them more refined thinkers and clean creators. They think that the world has to see things from their own perspective and think about life with a completely different dimension.

Whoever wishes to make a career in arts and humanities must understand the following things.

1. It is not just a branch of academics but a life-defining pursuit. It is deeply connected with all other branches such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Indeed there is a value of rankings and grades but this branch is more than just academic accolades.

2. The majority of people give very little value to philosophies and stories in their daily lives and they keep talking about money, percentages, and major statistics. If one wants to study arts and humanities with a deeper knowledge, one may go deeper into the nuances of human behavior, the inner areas of the human psyche, and thought processes.

3. This also leads a person to a spiritual dimension and makes him/her rethink all the behaviors and endeavors of human beings. The key questions such as what, why, who, how, when, and where will become the drivers of the human mind rather than having a mind full of numbers that keep thinking about money all day.

4. Those who are not in arts and humanities may think that the people within this field are "lucky" and enjoying all the "luxuries" of life; but here is a myth buster: the real learners, thinkers, and creators don't enjoy the materialistic aspect of life and never expect to live like that. They consume only what they need the most and do only what is the most necessary at the given time and in situations. The only thing they enjoy is the clarity of their wisdom and life.

5. To study arts and humanities, one must be aware of the deeds of past figures and have a sharp historical and political sense to study whatever is happening in today's time. Because students will always have to see things of today with the pastness of the past.

6. During the study the students may get frustrated and tired of the rigorous thought process and discussions he/she has to go through. But no need to worry, to create a new understanding one must have a breakthrough of their own ego and pre-established beliefs. Once the mind is free from all the past conditions, a great highway is there to study further.

7. There should be readiness to leave the ego aside and know something new and fresh. Because no creative field is free from biases and mental conditioning. There might be a few aspects that may affect you directly at the personal level but it is the demand of this discipline that people go through this process and ask questions at deeper levels.

These points will be fruitful to the students and aspirants who want to study arts, humanities, languages, literature, and philosophies. This would definitely establish new perspectives and understanding of the entire world.

Change is inevitable, so the mind, so the body, and so the life. Embrace with all your power and spirit.

Happy learning.
Thank You!

Quantum Physics: Etymology, Definition and Examples

Etymology of Quantum Physics

  • Quantum: Derived from the Latin word quantus, meaning "how much" or "amount." It refers to the smallest possible discrete unit of any physical property.
  • Physics: From the Greek physis, meaning "nature." It is the study of the fundamental laws governing the natural world.

Together, quantum physics literally means "the study of the smallest quantities in nature."

Definition of Quantum Physics

Quantum physics (or quantum mechanics) is a branch of physics that deals with the behavior of particles on an atomic and subatomic scale. It describes the peculiar rules that govern the smallest units of matter and energy, such as electrons, photons, and other fundamental particles.

Unlike classical physics, which works well for large objects (like planets or cars), quantum physics operates in a realm where particles can behave in ways that seem counterintuitive, like existing in two places at once or changing their state when observed.

Key Concepts in Quantum Physics

  1. Quantum: The smallest indivisible unit of a property, like energy. For example, light is made of particles called photons, which are quanta of light.

  2. Wave-Particle Duality: Particles like electrons and photons exhibit both particle-like and wave-like properties depending on how we observe them.

    • Example: Light sometimes behaves like a wave (like ripples on a pond), and at other times, it behaves like a stream of particles (photons).
  3. Superposition: A particle can exist in multiple states or positions at the same time until it is measured.

    • Example: An electron can be in several different locations around an atom, but when you observe it, it "chooses" a single position.
  4. Entanglement: When two particles become entangled, their states are linked no matter how far apart they are. Changing the state of one instantly affects the other.

    • Example: If two electrons become entangled, altering the spin of one will instantaneously change the spin of the other, even if they are light-years apart.
  5. Uncertainty Principle: Introduced by Werner Heisenberg, this principle states that certain pairs of properties (like position and momentum) cannot both be known exactly at the same time. The more precisely you know one, the less precisely you can know the other.

    • Example: If you know exactly where an electron is, you can't be sure about how fast it moves, and vice versa.

Simple Examples of Quantum Physics in Action

  1. Photoelectric Effect:

    • Explanation: When light shines on certain materials, it can eject electrons from the surface. Albert Einstein explained this using quantum physics, showing that light comes in discrete packets called photons.
    • Real-Life Example: Solar panels work based on the photoelectric effect. Photons from sunlight hit the surface, eject electrons, and generate electricity.
  2. Schrödinger’s Cat (Thought Experiment):

    • Explanation: Schrödinger imagined a cat inside a box with a radioactive atom that could either decay or not decay, triggering the release of poison. According to quantum physics, until you open the box and check, the cat is both alive and dead (a superposition).
    • Purpose: This paradox illustrates how quantum particles exist in multiple states until observed.
  3. Double-Slit Experiment:

    • Explanation: When light or electrons are shot through two slits onto a screen, they create an interference pattern like waves. But when observed, they act like particles, passing through one slit or the other.
    • Real-Life Example: This experiment reveals wave-particle duality and shows how observing a system can alter its behavior.

Summary of Quantum Physics Principles

  1. Discreteness: Energy and matter are quantized, coming in tiny, indivisible units.
  2. Wave-Particle Duality: Particles can behave like waves, and waves can behave like particles.
  3. Superposition: Particles exist in all possible states until they are measured.
  4. Entanglement: Two linked particles can instantly influence each other across any distance.
  5. Uncertainty: There's a fundamental limit to how precisely we can know certain properties of particles at the same time.

Quantum physics challenges our classical understanding of reality but forms the foundation for much of modern technology, like semiconductors, lasers, and quantum computers.

Technology in Education and ELT - Video Takeaways

Hello Readers!

In this blog we will see what are the key important videos about education and technology. A brief summary or points are also mentioned about what speakers want to say in the video.

Here is the key question to answer in this blog.
Q. Summarize thoughts expressed by the speakers in the videos. What is the main message that you take into consideration in context of Technology in Education (in general) and ELT (in particular)?

Click here to be redirected to Dr. Dilip Barad's blog post from where this blog is written as a response.

Sugata Mitra, Marc Prenskey, Sir Ken Robinson, Salman Khan and David Crystal are very notable names among the folks who really think about teaching and learning. Some of them are computer programmers and some of them are educationalists. But they all think about one thing in common that is education system and learning process. Let's watch their videos and get each of their ideas.

Sri Ken Robinson

Video 1. Sir Ken Robinson: Changing Education Paradigm

Key Points: Sir Ken Robinson talks about the education reformation happening in several countries. He says that there are two reason for the need of reforming education. Economic and Cultural. Children who are now being educated need to establish themselves in the economy of the country. Children will have to have knowledge of cultural identities and interaction with communities in future. This can happen only when we look at how do we pass on our cultural genes to the succeeding generation. The idea of following stereotype system in education seems very irrelevant to kids nowadays.

Sugata Mitra

Video 2. Sugata Mitra: School in the cloud- SOLE

Key Points:

Video 3. Sugata Mitra: Future of Learning

Key Points: The future of learning will be self paced, self controlled and self directed. Self learning will be the prime focus of ICT tools. Sugata Mitra has done remarkable experiment called "Hole in the Wall" and made his firm argument that learning can happen without teachers also. According to him admiration leads children to learn more. Elders just have to encourage the children to make them learn more.

Salman Khan

Video 4. Salman Khan: Let's use video to reinvent education

Key Points: Video is the most interactive audio visual medium of lerning. Sal Khan explains how he made simple start up with Khan Academy. The video version of lectures are straightforward and playable and pause able at any time. Learners can watch a single video as many time required and learn near to 100%. Sal Khan initially made videos on YouTube to teach his cousins but now his videos on Maths, Science, Business learning and so on are widely watched throughout the world.

Marc Prenskey

Video 5. Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants - Marc Prensky

Key Points: Marc Prensky points out two major terms: Digital Natives and Digial Immigrants. According to him the generation born before the arrival of TV, multimedia and internet are called digital immigrants. These digital immigrants have learnt many things later on in their lives either from their kids or students.

"Our students have changed radically. Today’s students are no longer the people our educational system was designed to teach." Prensky

Prensky also quotes in his paper that Digital Natives are the speakers of the language of digital tools. If we see this in a loose form, we speak many words related to digital world like, 'download', 'upload', 'browsing, 'print', 'link'. . . etc.

"What should we call these “new” students of today? Some refer to them as the N-[for Net]-gen or D-[for digital]-gen. But the most useful designation I have found for them is Digital Natives. Our students today are all “native speakers” of the digital language of computers, video games and the Internet." Prensky

Those of us who were not born into the digital world but have, at some later point in our lives, become fascinated by and adopted many or most aspects of the new technology are, and always will be compared to them, Digital Immigrants. - Prensky

Digital Natives have different thinking pattern than that of the Digital Immigrants. Natives think with two or more ideas parallelly and they can do multitasking.

David Crystal

For the videos of David Crystal's views about use of language and technology, please click on the title here - Technology and ELT - David Crystal's Views on English Language Teaching

On the whole. . .

If we take the core and general idea of these videos, then, the main recurrent voice comes from them is this. Education system needs several changes in terms of testing and evaluation, in terms of teaching pedagogy. ICT tools, Web 2.0 tools must be included in the classroom teaching. This makes learning more effective, engaging and more productive. Moreover, it increases the results and grades very significantly. The better learners will create better society and make better economy.

While English Language Teaching - ELT is concerned, ICT and Web 2.0 tools are necessary to enhance the English basic skills LSRW. Watching videos increases the practice of listening. . .
Further this particular ELT aspect is explored in detail in the blog given below. Click on the link.

Can Technology Replace Teachers ? - Stream of Ideas and Thoughts

Hello Readers!

Let's begin this first blog of 2021 with few very relevant and timely quotes.

“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.”― Benjamin Franklin

Technology will never replace great teachers, but technology in the hands of great teachers is transformational. - George Couros

https://twitter.com/AdamGeisen/status/940259404124958721?s=19

Human being as a social animal lives various lives in one body. Human has to play lot many roles like social: father, mother, son, daughter, husband, wife. . . and as a professional: seller, buyer, sales person, receptionist, tour guide, photographer, engineer, psychiatrist, teacher. . .

Let us do a brain churning in this blog, and let's see how far we can think about the parallels of human beings and technology and then education and technology.

It is nearly impossible to live life without technology. For the purpose of communication, telegram was the newly introduced tool decreasing the value of post cards and letters. Computer and internet came to humans as devoted and timely assistants to do faster and safer communication. Email services made a drastic change in it. Telephones, and then cordless intercoms and then smartphones made revolutionary changes in our modes of communications. The latest of this is instant messaging like WhatsApp and other quick chat apps.

For transportation, we use several vehicles. For industrial purpose we have steam engine, power looms, and many machines which increase the production overnight. In the field of agriculture we have tractors, thrashers, sprayer and so on.

In short we just have to ask one question: Where is the absence of technology ? Which is the field which has no integration of technology ? The answer is self explanatory.

What differs technology from humans?
Unlike human beings, technology is not a social animal. It has no animal instincts like hunger, thirst, sleep and reproduction. Technology has nothing to do with cultural celebrations and religious festivals. It keeps on working until we humans switch it off. That too when humans get "tired of working". Technology never gets tired.

But why technology has become most important ?
Humans tend to make margin errors. Human mistakes reduce the rate of production, and less production leads to less profit. Nowadays we see that industries have very less amount of human employees and most of the work is done by robotics hands and machines. Industries like glass articles, wooden factories have machines for turning shredding, cutting and sawing. Factories of several goods run 24 hours without a break.

Human beings demand social and emotional needs to be satisfied. Humans have to sleep and eat.

If every job will be taken by technology then what humans will do ?
There are several scopes in human life that humans can explore and think beyond the boundaries. One of such field is creativity and innovation. Arts and humanities is not only a branch of study but also a golden key to ponder upon such thoughtful and worth noting areas which are still not come to light completely.

Let's talk Education.

As we have covered several fields in which technology is widely used now it is right time to think about education in terms of technology. There are several arguments and theories around a very pertinent and poignant question :

* Can technology replace teachers?

It is not so novel and untouched question among academicians and educators. Education, when it stands aside from corporate sector and industries, it is a service sector. Traditional knowledge system of Ashram is now replaced with schools and colleges. Guru (Teacher in ancient Ashram ideology) used to teach their disciples (Students) having the responsibility of teaching several Vidhyas (knowledges, subjects) to students. This was the time of servitude. And as humanitarian approach, education is still considered as service sector. But in today's era of information and technology, education is also shaking hands with technology. Not whole heartedly but still with a grin weird smile on face. (If I personify the thought !!!)

There can be no direct answer to this question such as "Yes" and "No". All we can do is just think about the probabilities and possibilities. If we think of the answer as "No", then there are several thoughts which come to mind immediately and below links come to support this thinking. But as such this "No" can be falsified also.

What happens when we introduce machines and technology in education?
COVID19 corona pandemic has taught entire education system the importance of technology. Technology was already having tools of remote communications which are widely used nowadays to teach and learn online. Students are using desktops or laptops, smartphones to attend online classes. Teachers are using the same tools to teach online. No students come to structured traditional class and then too, learning happens. Students and teachers are hundreds of kilometers away from one another, staying at home, then too, teaching learning happens. We are living in such time where many things have become faceless. Banking has become paperless and faceless. Attendance in an online class also is partially faceless. Food delivery is also becoming faceless. In terms of education if we think, students lack personal physical touch which enhances internal emotional intelligence.

What does technology do with teachers and students?
It teaches humans to make less mistakes, to be more active and to give no excuses. Precision and accuracy are the words which technology teaches us. When one works with technology, several human qualities like honesty, accountability and responsibility are tested. There are several online services which captures the plagiarism in research papers and articles. Yes, technology also helps us to be a good civilians and makes us practice ethics also.

What if robots take place of teachers?
Whenever we think of the idea about introducing something which is related to technology, it is always welcomed by power and management. Machines are easy to handle than human beings. A teacher may talk about the things which are not relevant to the current subject under discussion and may divert students' attention from the key points to another ones. Robots don't take any digression. Whichever data is fed to robots they will teach to the point and give all the way straight forward lectures to students. Robots are highly precise in time. All robo teachers can have tight scheduling of time and dates and lectures. No clash of ego comes to interfere in teaching process when robot becomes teacher. If a class of 12th standard requires 10 teachers, management may make a choice of having more than 5 robo teachers out of 10. Otherwise 8 robots and 2 human teacher and so on. On a larger structure it also saves time and money and generates net profit which has very less depreciation.

If robots become teachers, what human teacher will do?
Human teacher still has many things to do. Human teacher has to be there when student requires any guidance about how to use various digital tools. As mentioned earlier that human qualities like accountability and honesty is to be tested, human teachers should be there to teach students those values because after all, all of human's efforts and education is there to become good human beings, good citizens, having correct vision of living life. May be the future generations will require more parental guidance and teacher's guidance in terms of fair use of technology. And fair use can only be taught when technology is fairly practiced by teachers and parents at first place. So, technology comes to us to teach human qualities, which are somewhere forgotten in today's materialistic money minded world.

Teachers and parents are almost playing equal and important roles in a student's life. Education without technology is not at all acceptable idea in 21st century. We have to walk on the path of technology and then enhance the student's skills and confidence. Future teachers will require very deep knowledge of psychology, philosophy, social and political sciences, literatures, films, documentaries and humanities. Shallowness and half complete knowledge will be of no use for teachers. Future generations will have more and more anxieties and mood swings and state of depression and many mental casualties. In such situation teachers can be the best counsellors after parents for students.

Indeed this is the best ever opportunity to empower teachers as well as students to be future ready, befriending technology at hand and walking towards the better future of tomorrow. There is one important thing to be remembered: if we will make the right choices today, we will be able to create better opportunities for tomorrow's generation.

Here are some points taken from the video mentioned below.

* Advertisements
1. Internet Baby
The advancement of technology and how young generation is readily accepting all new ICT gadgets right from childhood. Yet this video and ad is made with humor but yet it has very important message. The message is be future ready and welcome new changes in terms of technology.

2. Education for all - Idea cellular network
This ad shows how mobile phone and cellular network can be used in remote learning. Breaking the bounds of physical classroom. Provided villages and rural areas are equipped with proper connectivity of internet.

* Last video Satyamev Jayate
In this ad it is shown here that how internet and a useful tool of google Chrome can be helpful in sorting out the burning issues. Several government schemes are now coming for help and we just have to take benefit of it from proper guidance with the use of internet. Technology can encourage humans to remain morally and ethically transparent in terms of governance. It can sharpen our civic sense also.

These are just thoughts and ideas which, in future, may become very significant to ponder upon. And who knows this blog will be considered in future as worth reading post for educators !

Technoculture and Risk Society

Introduction

‘Cultural studies’ is a branch of academics which undergoes various kinds of cultures and societies. It began in early 1960s in Birmingham Center for Contemporary Cultural Studies (BCCCS). Stuart Hall and other cultural critics were pioneers of cultural studies. The way it moves further, it covers larger discourses and subjects like anthropology, structuralism, and post structuralism, post colonialism,

We live in Risk Society

Risk has become integral part of our lifestyle. Each and every work we do, we are threatened by several risks. For instance we take the incident of drinking water. We are much aware of its cleanliness and purity but still we fear to drink that water confidently because in our subconscious minds we have the risk factors which work endlessly.

Ulrich Beck propounded the influential ‘risk society’ in thesis in Risk Society: Towards a New Modernity (1992) and later works (1995, 1997). Risk, Beck inform us, is not real, risks are about 'becoming-real'. As soon as risks become real, they cease being risks, and become, instead disasters. (If one may engage in an aside for the purpose of illustration, India's famed batting line-up, all the way to number six, always carries the risk of collapse. When it happens in the field, then it is not risk any more: it is a national catastrophe.) (Nayar 79)

As Beck has explained that risk is what is imaginary but still has the capacity to become real. It is like cause and effect chain. The benefits of anything are highlighted and then the other product comes up with the hazards and risks of consuming it.

Just like Beck has given the example of cricket match, one can take the risk of fire as an example. In a forest, there is a risk of fire, because two branches can cross sometime and the fire may light. If this happens, the risk becomes real, and it applies somewhere else. So the risk factor works as transformative pattern.

There are first world countries, second world countries and third world countries. All countries strive for expending on defense and border protection.

Techno-culture

Technology has become integral part of our life style. When it comes to the mediums of communications or mode of transport such as cars, trains, buses, aircrafts and other vehicles that include technology have become the most important part of life. Smart phones with latest and fast processors are considered as luxury nowadays. In our day to day conversation we use many words such as delete, send, receive, forward which are terms of communication. In the world of technology it has become necessary to cop up with updated information. With maximum consumption of technology it forms technoculture. The more people use technology, more words will be introduced and people will make them part of life and thus the culture will take place. In a nut shell, the culture which includes active participation of technology forms technoculutre.

To quote a few lines from the text, technoculture is mentioned as follows

… Risks then get displaced to other ‘sites’: future disasters. Thus risks are potential disasters. While it is not necessary to run the entire debate about risk society here, it may be useful to pay attention to one particular arena where the risk thesis appears most relevant: technoculture. We live in an increasingly technologized world. Global capitalism – the immediate geopolitical context of our nation-states – runs on the engines of information and communication technologies. Our everyday life – from shopping to education – depends heavily on technology, with greater or lesser degrees of both efficiency and necessity. (Nayar 79)

In this era of information explosion, we are continuously given bits and pieces of information, which we don't even require. While using internet, one receives a bunch of advertisements. This overflow of ads sometimes make one think critically that what kind of consumerist and capitalist society we live in!

The other connecting example of risk and technology is the anti-virus software. There are some anti-malware software also that guarantees the security and safety of the computer from bugs and viruses. But the risk of getting virus is still there. Even after having protection software it happens. Thus we demand more powerful and assured protection software. Similarly in the field of defense, everything now gets controlled by technology and computers. Even UAV – Unarmed Ariel Vehicles are used in war nowadays. After the attack of 9/11, countries have become more alert and proactive in the use of technology in defense only for the protection of their boundaries. Such protections include anti-ballistic missiles, and supersonic fighter jets. Protection also becomes risk and the story goes on and on.

Risk Society and Market

Marketing has its own fundamentals other than humanity as discourse. From the production of commodity to the delivery to the consumers, it is loaded with psychic theories. Keeping people in fear and making money from that risk is now trending strategy in market. For example, there are soap companies which sell their soaps by frightening us with germs and bacteria, various diseases. And in competition other soap brands will try to degrade other brands to sell their own. Further, the whole new narrative comes in the gossips at the evening while enjoying tea and snacks. It can be said that our daily practices and activities define the culture and society. Our constant negligence for seeking the authenticity of information and truth make us puppets of power. We submit the reigns of our thinking and free will to power by ourselves. It is acceptable that risk has become part of life nowadays but still we are unable to identify the intensity of risks. To think deeply, by doing everything we are putting ourselves in a risk zone, by walking on footpath, traveling on vehicles, taking bus, train or flight.

Market conditions are also a good study in today’s time. But we shall stress upon only risk factors and market situations. There are many types of markets such as advertisement market, commodity market, stock markets etc.

Stock market and advertisement field are full of risks in which brands and companies strive for high rates and TRPs. If any television program is powered by a particular brand, then during that show that brand will promote its product only. Other companies and brands suffer for publicity. The same goes with stock market. Due to high price of oil and other basic crude items such as gold and silver, or sometimes due to the crucial decisions of governments which may directly affect the economy of the country – India for instance, there comes a crisis on the stocks of companies. Within few minutes, billions and trillions of currency transactions happen among companies. And interestingly, stock market of India has an appropriate symbol of bull and a popular phrase “bulls and bears” for ups and downs of shares. This clears the risk element in market.

Advertisements

In today’s era of technology and communication hardly anyone will be there who might not know anything about advertisements. Ranging from print media to digital media, pages and programs are full of advertisements. Through these ads, companies do bombardment of various sign and symbols. As it is known that a picture is worth than a thousand words. Companies use various cautionary symbols that make us alert of some hazards and threats. This visualization of risk becomes stronger in consumers mind and they get convinced to buy a particular product.

It takes patience and constant awareness to make a right decision. In today’s time, one gets confused in making choices. One can take a pause and start thinking rationally that why and how power works on the mass.

Solutions

Will will find a way – Ulrich Beck also gave the solution to this never ending process of risk – solution pendulum swing. He explained that one has to read power against power. One should always think to have the alternative of power and authority. By quoting the following words,

“Beck’s solution to the autopoietic risk culture (where a system generates risk and its possible solution within itself) is to find political potential outside the government. We need to open up intrasystematic closures. Politics must be about being able to communicate between systems – something that is becoming increasingly impossible today. Thus the complete indifference of the government to any criticism – witness with ease with which governments get out of such accusations by appointing, with a complete lack of transparency, a commission of inquiry, or simply refusing comment in India – is a mark of autopoiesis of the political system. The representatives of the people are no more accountable to the people. They refer only to each other in debates that are increasingly disconnected from the opinions/criticisms/demands of the people. It is this autopoiesis that causes people who withdraw from politics as a system that has ‘closed’ itself.” (Nayar 81)

Conclusion

Right from the childhood we are taught to be careful with each and every thing, which is also a pre conditioning of minds. Time and again the use of technology has increased and so did the risk. Through this written assignment it is attempted all the important aspects of techno culture and risk theory be covered up.
